About

Welcome to the corner of the web dedicated to the MS Shad Shootout.  The MS Shad Shootout is a fishing tournament to raise money for the MS Challenge Walk.  Multiple Sclerosis is a chronic, often disabling disease that attacks the central nervous system (CNS), which is made up of the brain, spinal cord, and optic nerves. Symptoms may be mild, such as numbness in the limbs, or severe, such as paralysis or loss of vision.  Every year chapters of the National MS Society hold challenge walks across the country to raise both money and awareness to this disease. The money raised goes toward MS Research Programs and Support Programs for patients and families suffering from Multiple Sclerosis.

Why are we doing this?  My friend, Kim, suffers from MS and is a huge supporter of the National MS Society.  She takes part in various NMSS events from the Mud Run to the Challenge Walk.  To enter the challenge walk, teams must raise at least $1500 per team member for the NMSS.  To help raise money, awareness, and help get her team into the challenge walk, I thought it would be a great opportunity to host a fishing tournament opened up to anglers of all types.  One thing I have learned over the years is that anglers are some of the most giving people in the world.  Early April is a great time for fishing in Central Virginia. Bringing together anglers to target some of the great spring fish seemed the perfect venue to host this event.

Why a Shad Shootout?  If you have targeted Shad, you will know what a blast it is to go after the fish that has been dubbed the poor man's Tarpon.  Every spring Richmond, VA is host to thousands of these great fish.  They are an amazing fish to target and anglers of all skill sets can hook into one of these.  The technique for fishing for these fish is simple and they put up a great fight on light tackle.  Combine that with the blue catfish that feed on these fish, and you can have a great day on the water or from shore.

Why are you launching from Anncarrows Landing?  Anncarrows is a great spot for the annual shad run and offers fishing opportunities for anglers of all types.  The concrete wall at Anncarrows is a popular spot for shore fishermen, there are two boat ramps for those who wish to fish from powerboats, and it is a popular spot for anglers fishing from kayaks and canoes.  The chances of catching the target fish are equal for anglers of all types from this location.

Why should I participate in this event?  First and foremost, the money raised will support a very worthy cause.  Second to that, it will be a great day on the water followed by a fun time at the after event!

What do I get for my entry fee to the tourney?  First you get the great feeling of doing something for a worthy cause.  Second, you will get to spend the day fishing with fellow anglers during  one of Central Virginia's best fishing seasons.  Third,  you will get to compete for prizes.  Finally, you will get to socialize with fellow anglers at the awards ceremony.
